Dead Format

PRODUCT DESIGN. In late 2016, I created an illustration using Adobe Illustrator that I wanted to turn into a vinyl collectible toy. With the help of an old work colleague, a 3D render was created from the original illustration using ZBrush. The design was then modified for use with a 3D printer, which was used to create the hero model.

A mold was cast using a vinyl resin that was liquefied and then allowed to harden over 30 minutes. The actual toy was created using a two-part resin. I painted the toy using a combination of water-based acrylic paints and Posca pens. The design was limited to a test run of 5 units.

I used Adobe InDesign to create the packaging for the toy. Using the tape from some old cassettes, this was placed in the bottom of the box to be used as cushioning. The packaging was kept black to give it a dark feel, since cassette tapes are considered a dead format, and to also tie-in with my branding. The product also included a "Certificate of Authenticity" to give the design a limited edition feel. A stamped seal of approval is included on the back of the certificate.
